the Project study

A radical new approach to skilled long-term care, the physical environment of each Green House home is designed to transform the tradition of an institutional nursing facility into a small, residential environment providing the look and feel of a true home for 10 – 12 elders.

Each home is reflective of those in the surrounding community and is characterized by elements that are “warm, smart, and green.” The interior materials, colors, and furnishings project a sense of belonging for those living and working in the home. The elders’ private bedrooms allow ample sunlight and have easy access to a common hearth, with a living room, open kitchen, and dining area.

Kalkaska Memorial Health Center’s project consists of the new construction of two 10-bed “Green House” residential care facilities and their associated site work. These new facilities will connect to each other, and to the existing long-term care wing of Kalkaska Memorial Health Center by means of an enclosed, climate-controlled walkway.
