Construction Superintendent | Traverse City

Spence Brothers, a General Contractor and Construction Manager, is looking to fill a Construction Superintendent position to service our Northern Michigan market, based out of our Traverse City office.

The Construction Superintendent will be comfortable overseeing the entire operation of the construction site. They should be able to determine and address any risk areas to maintain the safety of workers. The Construction Superintendent should be experienced in communicating project milestones with clients and other parties and be able to establish a timeline for completion.

Responsibilities
  • The Construction Superintendent is responsible for overall construction job site coordination and management.
  • The Construction Superintendent will provide daily leadership and direction to Spence Brothers and sub-contractors.
  • The Construction Superintendent will ensure quality, cost, schedule and client satisfaction goals are being met.
  • Act as a safety champion on all projects and lead by example by ensuring safety, compliance and quality regulations are followed. Report when workers are not following company safety procedures.
  • Correct unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintain records and provide the Project Manager updates regarding changes in scope and schedule.
  • The Construction Superintendent will work closely with the Project Manager to ensure successful project completion.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules.
  • Coordinate construction projects for the delivery of General Contracting/Construction Management projects.
  • Manage and coordinate manpower for both self-performed and subcontracted trade work.
The ideal candidate would have
  • 5-10 years of experience supervising commercial construction
  • Experience in managing projects that exceed $5 million in value
  • Understanding of construction management processes
  • Proficiency in reading and comprehending blueprints, building plans, schematics, specifications, and contractor scopes of work
  • Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal and supervisory skills are critical to the success of the construction superintendent
  • Expert problem solving and planning skills are imperative
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Experience with construction management software such as ProCore and Bluebeam
  • OSHA certification preferred

Concrete Construction Superintendent | Traverse City

Spence Brothers, a General Contractor and Construction Manager is looking to fill a Concrete Construction Superintendent position to service our Northern Michigan market, based from our Traverse City office.

Responsibilities encompass the total supervision of all concrete operations at the site to which the individual is assigned. Superintendent must ensure that all employees and subcontractors are working in strict adherence to plans, specifications, schedule, safety, and corporate standards within the confines of the project’s established budget while maintaining a clean and organized job site.

Responsibilities
  • Manage all aspects of concrete construction including layout, foundations, walls, formwork, rebar installation, fine grading, slab prep, SOG placements, SOMD, elevated slabs, and site concrete.
  • Demonstrate productivity, organization and leadership. Instill this in your crew.
  • Organize and oversee field labor to ensure strict adherence to schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Ensure execution of work within the project’s budget in terms of manpower, production, and material expenditures.
  • Adhere to and enforce safety guidelines, hazard awareness, and solutions.
  • Ensure strict compliance with contract documents and quality control programs.
  • Conducting and/or attending pre-construction, progress, and other project meetings.
  • Always look out for the best interests of Spence Brothers and its employees.
  • Manage project changes. Ensure the most up-to-date contract documents are being used. Prevent re-work and “not-in-contract” work.
  • Manage day-to-day field activities to ensure project milestone dates, productivity and overall completion dates are met.
  • Manage and look-ahead no less than three weeks to proactively identify issues and facilitate solutions.
  • Coordination of work alongside other subcontractors to ensure a safe, productive and organized execution of work.
  • Accurately tracking and reporting the time of manpower responsible to oversee.
  • Coded time, material, equipment, and subcontractor-billing for proper job costing.
  • Ensure strict adherence to proper safety and incident reporting procedures, immediately reporting problems/issues to the attention of the Safety Director.
The ideal candidate would have
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience supervising concrete construction preferred.
  • Current safety credentials including OSHA 30, First Aid, and CPR preferred.
  • Layout/surveying capabilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and experience adhering to, OSHA guidelines.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and specifications and effectively communicate this understanding to others.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Experience with construction project management software (Procore, preferred).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office & Excel.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
