Spence Brothers Wins AGC Build Michigan Award for Milliken Nature Center
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Spence Brothers has been awarded the prestigious AGC Build Michigan Award in the Building Construction (less than $10 million) category for its exceptional work on the Milliken Nature Center at Arch Rock on Mackinac Island. Presented by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Michigan, this award recognizes Michigan’s premier construction excellence, highlighting outstanding commercial construction projects throughout the state.

DEDICATION TO CRAFTSMANSHIP AND TEAMWORK
During the award ceremony, Bob Spence, CEO and Regional President – Northern Michigan, reflected on the collective effort that brought the project to life:
“We were committed to the project, and it turned out great. Paul Acker led quality control and safety; Brian Kelly managed the project; Mike Demaestri served as superintendent; Tom Bennett handled estimating; and Chris Touhey oversaw as project director. We also had 15-20 rough and finish carpenters working on the exposed cedar exterior – a challenging task – along with dozens of logistical partners who made this project a success.”

The Milliken Nature Center, named after former Michigan Governor William Milliken, replaces a 50-year-old visitor facility with a modern, fully accessible space designed to enhance the experience of more than 500,000 annual visitors to Mackinac Island’s iconic Arch Rock. Designed by architecture firm TowerPinkster, the center seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, featuring a stone facade, exposed wood beams, and energy-efficient systems that create a sustainable and immersive educational environment.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES WITH INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY
Building on Mackinac Island, where motor vehicles are prohibited, required careful logistical planning. Spence Brothers implemented a specialized transportation strategy, including ferry deliveries, horse-drawn wagons, and on-site material mixing to ensure smooth operations with minimal environmental impact.
Construction also took place through harsh winter conditions, requiring crew members to remain on the island for extended periods. Winter-specific safety measures, daily briefings, and precise scheduling ensured steady progress while prioritizing worker safety.
With a commitment to environmental stewardship, the project incorporates energy-efficient lighting, modern water filtration, and a sustainable septic system. Collaboration with Mackinac State Historic Parks helped protect the island’s natural beauty, including its trees, roots, and pathways, while enhancing the visitor experience.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION
The AGC Build Michigan Awards celebrate Michigan’s premier construction excellence, recognizing the excellence of an entire project team. Projects are judged on their ability to meet the challenge of difficult jobs, excel in construction techniques, respond to client needs, and contribute to the community. Spence Brothers is honored to be recognized for its dedication to these principles and its leadership in building Michigan’s future through projects that revitalize communities and enhance the economy.
