the Project study

The new home for the Interlochen Public Library was completed in November 2018. The physical and technical requirements required to meet growing community demands were unattainable within their previous structure, and any further repair and replacement costs toward this end were unjustifiable. Spence Brothers worked with the Library’s Board of Directors for several years throughout a capital campaign to develop a facility that could be built within a budget supported by donors and the public.

The new library is part of a new Village Center focused on public services as outlined in Interlochen’s Enhancement Plan. Inside, there are many cozy areas to sit and read, as well is a dedicated teen room, and a kids room with play area. The facility also features a large community room with a commercial kitchen. It was designed with an exterior aesthetic reflective of the area’s “camp” history with a three-story glass ingress to create an attractive sense of entry visible from M-137.
