WORK / HEAL

the Project study

This project, for which Spence Brothers was awarded the an approximate $10 million structural concrete package, as well as an approximate $5 million general trades package, involves the construction of a new 12-story inpatient hospital with two underground levels.

Our work involves approximately 11,000 cubic yards concrete and includes footings, foundations, basement walls, concrete columns, tunnel walls and lids, elevator walls and pier caps, grade beams, pilasters, mat foundations, areaway retaining walls, as well as both the slab-on-grade work and cast-in-place stairs located inside the tunnel and building footprint respectively.

The new facility will be connected to the University of Michigan’s existing Cardiovascular Center via an enclosed connection for use by the public.

Plans for this new facility have been years in the making and include the relocation of 110 beds from the University Hospital. This new hospital will alleviate capacity issues at the University Hospital, which is currently at 90%. The facility will contain space for 264 beds overall, as well as 20 operating rooms, and 3 radiology suites.
